What is a Board and Post Fence?

This fence style is another type of split rail fence and one of the most cost-effective ways to fence your property. Construction of the board and post fence consists of 4″x4″ up to 6″x6″ posts with 2″x4″ up to 2″x8″ rails. Designs can vary from 2 or 3 rails in heights from 3′ up to 6′. Because this fence is an open design, welded wire can be used to keep your pets from escaping. We’ll also paint or stain the fence to add a personal touch and years of life to the cedar, as well as add a little flair with beveled post tops.

What Does Board and Post Look Like?

This photo features a split rail, board and post fence that we installed using 4″x4″ posts with 3, 2″x6″ rails. Welded wire was also installed using heavy duty galvanized staples in order to keep the homeowner’s small dogs from getting out under the fence. The structure was later finished in a white exterior paint.

To match the fence’s 3-rail design, we also built custom gates for this property. Another option that we talked about with the client was a picket style gate, but they ultimately decided to go with the matched look, and it turned out just like they envisioned.
